K-Variety Shows’ Project Groups

Two of the things that Korea are known for are the KPOP industry and their Korean entertainment shows. But how about we combine this in one? In this list, I wanna share some of girl and boy groups that were formed in variety shows!

Unnies from Sister’s Slam Dunk 2 (2017)

(soompi.com)

The Unnies were formed through the variety show Sister’s Slam Dunk or also known as Unnie’s Slam Dunk. I actually haven’t watched the Season 1 but I definitely got hooked by its 2nd season. Season 2 mainly focused on the continuation of a project girl group. The casting includes Kim Sook (host and comedianne), Jinkyung (model and actress), Kang Yewon (actress and singer), Han Chaeyong (model and actress), Jinyoung (trot singer), Minzy (soloist, former 2NE1 member) and Somi (soloist, former I.O.I member). The 7-member girl group released 2 songs namely Right? and LaLaLa Song.

The season 2 with 16 episodes and the official music video for Right? is available on YouTube.

Refund Sisters (Refund Expedition) from Hangout with Yoo (2020)

After the successful debut of SSAK3 (Yoo Jae Suk, Rain and Lee Hyori), Hangout with Yoo is back again with releasing a new project group but this time, a girl group with Yoo Jae Suk as the producer. Refund Sisters is a 4-member group formed by Uhm Jung Hwa, Lee Hyori, Jessi and Hwasa.

This girl group released only one song called Don’t Touch Me. You may watch the Refund Sisters on Hangout With Yoo Episodes 56-68.

MSG Wannabe from Hangout With Yoo (2021)

I am a super fan of this project boy group!

Yoo Jae Suk, through his imaginative and experimental mind, aimed to create a boy group same with SG Wannabe. SG Wannabe is a three-member South Korean vocal boy band who debuted in 2004.

During the selection of the final members, I think Yoo Jae Suk aka “Yoo Yaho” had a hard time selecting the right members. Eventually, he said that he will take the responsibility and passed all the 8 remaining members which were later divided into 2 sub-units namely JSDK and M.O.M.

MSG Wannabe released their official album with their own version of Journey to Atlantis (originally by LABOUM) and I Love You.

The first group was JSDK, short for Jung Sang Dong Ki which derived from the names of its members: Kim Jungmin (Kim Jung Su), Lee Sangyi, Lee Donghwi, and Simon Dominic (Jung Ki Suk).

They performed and released the songs Resignation and Only You.

The other group was M.O.M. or Men of Music which consists of Jee Seokjin (Byuloo-G), Kang Changmo (KCM), Parc Jaejung, and Wonstein.

They released a total of three songs namely, IF, Foolish Love and Do you want to hear.

You may watch the MSG Wannabe episodes on Hangout with Yoo Episodes 86-93, 95-101.

WSG Wannabe from Hangout With Yoo (2022)

Due to the popularity of the MSG Wannabe, Yoo Jae Suk as “Yoo Pal Bong” wanted to create its counterpart. WSG Wannabe is a 12-member vocal girl group. They are divided into three sub-units namely OASISO, SaFIRE, and Gaya-G.

OASISO (Sunny Hill’s Kota, Baby Vox’s Yoon Eun hye, actress Park Jin joo, and Urban Zakapa’s Jo Hyun-ah) released “Clink Clink”
Gaya-G (SeeYa’s Lee Boram, actress Jung Jiso, Laboum’s Soyeon, HYNN) released “At That Moment”
Sa-FIRE (Kwon Jin-ah, Navi, Live High’s Sole, comedienne Uhm Jiyoon) debuted with “I Missed You”

Each of the sub-units released their own songs which even entered and topped the korean charts. As a group, they released 2 songs namely Wonderful Love (originally by Momoland) and When I close my eyes.

On the last 2 episodes of the WSG Wannabe in Hangout with Yoo, the latter together with MSG Wannabe held a concert which showcased their wonderful voices and collaborations.

You may watch the WSG Wannabe episodes on Hangout with Yoo Episodes 133-149.
